Helen Taussig was an American cardiologist and medical researcher who is best known for her pioneering work in the field of pediatric cardiology. She was the first woman to be appointed as a full professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She was also the first woman to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Taussig was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 24, 1898. She was the daughter of a prominent lawyer and a mother who was a suffragist and a social reformer. She attended Radcliffe College and graduated in 1920 with a degree in zoology. She then attended Harvard Medical School, where she graduated in 1924. After graduating from Harvard, Taussig began her career as a research assistant at the Children's Hospital in Boston. She then moved to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she was appointed as a full professor in 1945. At Johns Hopkins, Taussig conducted research on the physiology of the heart and developed a technique for diagnosing and treating congenital heart defects in children. She also developed a procedure for treating a condition known as "blue baby syndrome," which is caused by a defect in the heart's ability to pump oxygenated blood. In 1947, Taussig was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, becoming the first woman to be elected to the organization. She was also the first woman to be appointed as a full professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1964, Taussig was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. She was also awarded the National Medal of Science in 1965. Taussig died on May 20, 1986, at the age of 87. She is remembered as a pioneer in the field of pediatric cardiology and for her groundbreaking research.
