Helena Amélia Oehler Stemmer is a Brazilian engineer and professor. She was born on 11 November 1927 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She is the first woman to graduate in engineering in Brazil, and the first woman to become a professor of engineering in the country. Stemmer graduated in engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 1951. She then went on to pursue a master's degree in engineering from the same university in 1954. She was the first woman to receive a master's degree in engineering in Brazil. Stemmer has worked as a professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul since 1954. She has also served as a professor at the University of São Paulo and the University of Brasília. Stemmer has received numerous awards and honors for her work in engineering. In 2002, she was awarded the Order of Scientific Merit by the Brazilian government. In 2004, she was awarded the Order of Rio Branco by the Brazilian government. Stemmer is currently 89 years old.
