Henri Cole is an American poet and essayist. He was born in Fukuoka, Japan, on May 9, 1956, to an American father and a Japanese mother. He grew up in Virginia and attended the College of William and Mary, where he earned a BA in English in 1978. He went on to earn an MFA from the University of Iowa in 1982. Cole has published nine collections of poetry, including Middle Earth (2003), which won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, and Touch (2001), which was a finalist for the National Book Award. He has also published two collections of essays, The Visible Man (1998) and Nothing to Declare (2010). Cole has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a MacArthur Fellowship. He is currently the poetry editor of The New Republic and teaches at the University of Virginia. As of 2021, Henri Cole's net worth is estimated to be $1 million.

From 1982 until 1988 he was executive director of The Academy of American Poets. Since that time he has held many teaching positions and been artist-in-residence at various institutions, including Brandeis University, Columbia University, Davidson College, Harvard University, Ohio State University, Reed College, Smith College, The College of William and Mary, and Yale University. He has collaborated with the visual artists Jenny Holzer and Kiki Smith. And from 2010 to 2014, he was poetry editor of The New Republic. Cole currently teaches at Claremont McKenna College.
