Henry Laurens was born on March 6, 1954 in Charleston, South Carolina. He is an American politician and diplomat who served as the President of the Continental Congress from 1777 to 1778. He was also a signer of the Articles of Confederation. Laurens was educated at the College of Charleston and the Middle Temple in London. He was a successful merchant and planter in South Carolina, and was a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses. He was a strong advocate of independence and was appointed President of the Continental Congress in 1777. Laurens was a major figure in the American Revolution, and was instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of Paris in 1783. He was also a signer of the Articles of Confederation. Laurens was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1776 to 1779, and was a delegate to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention in 1790. He was also a member of the South Carolina Senate from 1790 to 1792. Laurens died on December 8, 1792 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was 66 years old.
