Henry O. Pollak is a mathematician and professor emeritus at Rutgers University. He was born on 13 December, 1927 in Vienna, Austria. He is best known for his work in probability theory, stochastic processes, and mathematical finance. Pollak received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Vienna in 1951. He then moved to the United States, where he taught at the University of Michigan and the University of California, Berkeley before joining Rutgers University in 1965. At Rutgers, Pollak served as the chair of the mathematics department from 1965 to 1968 and was the founding director of the Center for Quantitative Finance and Risk Management from 1995 to 2000. He has also held visiting positions at the University of Paris, the University of Bonn, and the University of Tokyo. Pollak has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications, including the books Stochastic Processes (with Richard F. Bass, 1995) and A Course in Probability Theory (with Sheldon M. Ross, 1997). He has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Science Foundation Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Rutgers University Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research, and the Rutgers University Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. Pollak then joined Bell Labs (1951), where he in the early 1960s became director of the Mathematics and Statistics Research Center. He authored near forty papers, many of these with David Slepian and Henry Landau on analysis, function theory, probability theory, and mathematics education. He has applied mathematics to solve problems in physics and networks, communication theory, discrete systems, statistics and data analysis, and economic analysis. Pollak also holds patents in the area of signaling. He has held teaching positions in the mathematics department at Columbia University.

Born in Vienna, Austria, he since moved to United States. He received his B.Sc. in Mathematics (1947) from Yale University. While at Yale, he participated in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition and was on the team representing Yale University (along with Murray Gell-Mann and Murray Gerstenhaber) that won the second prize in 1947. He earned an M.A. and Ph.D. (1951) degree in mathematics from Harvard University, the latter on the thesis Some Estimates for Extremal Distance advised by Lars Ahlfors.
