Hildegard von Bingen was a German Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, philosopher, and polymath. She is considered to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany. She wrote theological, botanical, and medicinal texts, as well as letters, liturgical songs, and poems. She is also noted for the invention of a constructed language known as Lingua Ignota. Hildegard von Bingen was born into a noble family in 1098 in Bermersheim vor der Höhe, near Alzey in the Middle Rhine Valley. At the age of eight, she was dedicated to the Church and placed in the care of Jutta von Sponheim, the anchoress of the Benedictine monastery at Disibodenberg. She received her education at the monastery, where she learned Latin, theology, and the liberal arts. At the age of 38, Hildegard was elected magistra of the monastery, and she held this position until her death in 1179. During her lifetime, she wrote numerous works on theology, medicine, and natural history, as well as music and poetry. She also founded two monasteries, one at Rupertsberg and one at Eibingen.
