Hocine Aït Ahmed was an Algerian revolutionary and politician who served as the leader of the National Liberation Front (FLN) during the Algerian War of Independence. He was born on 20 August 1926 in Ain El Hammam, Tizi Ouzou Province, Algeria. He was the son of a farmer and was educated in French schools. Aït Ahmed was a leader of the Algerian independence movement and was a key figure in the Algerian War of Independence. He was a founding member of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and served as its leader from 1954 to 1958. He was also a member of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) and served as its president from 1958 to 1961. Aït Ahmed was a major proponent of the Algerian Revolution and was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the Evian Accords, which ended the war in 1962. He was also a major advocate for the rights of the Algerian people and was a vocal critic of the French government. Aït Ahmed was a member of the Algerian National Assembly from 1962 to 1991 and served as the president of the Assembly from 1989 to 1991. He was also a member of the Algerian Senate from 1991 to 1995. Aït Ahmed was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1964 and the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1965. He died on 23 December 2015 at the age of 89.

2015

Arrested and sentenced to death in 1964, he escaped from the El Harrach prison on May 1, 1966. Exiled in Switzerland, he became a doctor of law. After the riots of 1988, the Algerian president Chadli Ben Djedid proposed a new constitution calling for political pluralism. Aït Ahmed was invited to return to his country, where he came back in December 1989, at the head of the FFS, but again left his country after the assassination of the President, Mohamed Boudiaf, in June 1992. He repeatedly returned to Algeria since then, including during the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the war of liberation (November 1, 1954). Aït Ahmed died at the age of 89 in Lausanne, Switzerland on 23 December 2015.

After the Algerian War, Aït Ahmed resigned from the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) and all the organs of the new power during the crisis of the summer of 1962. In September 1963, he founded the Socialist Forces Front (FFS), which sought political pluralism in political life locked by the single party system.
