Williams began her career in journalism in 2000, working as a reporter for the Seven Network in Sydney. She then moved to the Nine Network in 2002, where she worked as a reporter and presenter for the network's news and current affairs programs. In 2006, Williams joined the ABC as a presenter for the network's flagship news and current affairs program, 7.30. She has since become one of the network's most recognisable faces, appearing regularly on the program and other ABC news and current affairs programs. Williams has also worked as a presenter for the ABC's international news service, ABC News 24, and has reported from locations around the world, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and the United States. On 12 March 2017, 60 Minutes broadcast two segments Williams produced centered around a series of interviews she conducted with Mohamedou Slahi. Slahi was one of the few individuals held in Guantanamo that American officials explicitly acknowledge torturing. CBS News described the interviews as Slahi's first television interviews since his repatriation. Williams traveled to Mauritania for those interviews.

On 21 August 2015, the New York Times included Williams in an article about leading female war correspondents. Elle magazine profiled Williams and several other women in a March 2016 article on female correspondents at CBS.

2012

Williams was hired by CBS in October 2012. She had previously worked for BBC News, CNN, and Sky News. She spent 12 years as a correspondent in China, and learned the Chinese language. She also studied the Turkish language, when she was a correspondent in Turkey.
