Howard Baker was an American politician and diplomat who served as a Republican U.S. Senator from Tennessee from 1967 to 1985. He was Senate Majority Leader from 1981 to 1985, and White House Chief of Staff from 1987 to 1988. He was also the U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2001 to 2005. Baker was born in Huntsville, Tennessee, and attended the University of Tennessee, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1952. He then attended the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he earned a law degree in 1953. Baker began his political career in 1964, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate. He served in the Senate until 1985, when he retired. During his time in the Senate, he served as Senate Majority Leader from 1981 to 1985. In 1987, Baker was appointed White House Chief of Staff by President Ronald Reagan. He served in this role until 1988. In 2001, Baker was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Japan by President George W. Bush. He served in this role until 2005. Baker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Grand Cordon, in 2005.
