Howard Bay was an American production designer, art director, and animation director. He was born on May 3, 1912 in Centralia, Washington. He attended the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in architecture. Bay began his career in the film industry in the late 1930s, working as an art director and production designer on a number of films. He worked on such films as The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939). In the 1940s, Bay began working in animation, directing a number of shorts for Warner Bros. and MGM. He directed such shorts as The Milky Way (1941), The Wabbit Who Came to Supper (1942), and The Big Snooze (1946). Bay continued to work in animation throughout the 1950s and 1960s, directing such shorts as The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1957) and The Cat Above and the Mouse Below (1964). He also worked as a production designer on a number of television series, including The Flintstones (1960-1966) and The Jetsons (1962-1963). Bay retired from the film industry in the late 1960s. He passed away on April 28, 1975 in Los Angeles, California. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. Won two Tony Awards: in 1960 as Best Scenic Designer (Dramatic) for "Toys in the Attic," and in 1966 as Best Scenic Designer for "Man of La Mancha." He also received two other Tony nominations: also in 1966, as Best Costume Designer along with collaborator Patton Campbell for "Man of La Mancha," and in 1970 as Best Scenic Designer for "Cry for Us All."
