Howard H. Pattee is a 97-year-old American scientist and professor emeritus of biophysics at Pennsylvania State University. He is best known for his work on the theory of communication in living systems. Pattee was born on October 5, 1926 in Pasadena, California. He received his bachelor's degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1948 and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1952. Pattee has been a professor of biophysics at Pennsylvania State University since 1956. He has written numerous books and articles on the theory of communication in living systems, including The Physical Basis of Life (1973), The Puzzle of Life's Origin (1984), and The Representation of Meaning in Natural Systems (1995). Pattee is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous awards, including the National Medal of Science in 1989 and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Science in 2002. Pattee is married to his wife, Mary, and has two children. He currently resides in State College, Pennsylvania.
