Hubert Aquin was a Canadian novelist, essayist, and filmmaker. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, and studied at the Université de Montréal and the Sorbonne. He was a member of the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) and was arrested in 1963 for his involvement in the organization. Aquin wrote several novels, including Prochain épisode (1965), which won the Governor General's Award for French-language fiction, and Neige noire (1968). He also wrote essays and directed several films, including Les Ordres (1974). Aquin died in 1977 at the age of 47. He was posthumously awarded the Prix du Québec in 1978.
