Riesenfeld was a prolific composer, conductor, and arranger of music for the stage and screen. He composed the scores for over 100 films, including the classic silent films The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and The Golem (1920). He also wrote the music for the first sound film in Germany, The Blue Angel (1930). He was a pioneer in the use of electronic instruments in film music, and was one of the first to use the theremin in his scores. He also wrote the music for the first German television series, Der Schwarze Kanal (1931). Riesenfeld was a prolific composer of operettas, ballets, and other stage works. He wrote the music for the operettas Der Zigeunerbaron (1911), Der Bettelstudent (1914), and Der Graf von Luxemburg (1917). He also wrote the music for the ballets Die Puppenfee (1913) and Der Zauberlehrling (1914). Riesenfeld died in Vienna on April 15, 1939.

1917

From 1917-1925 Hugo Riesenfeld was the manager of the Rivoli, Rialto and Criterion Theatres in New York City. A conductor and violinist, Riesenfeld was educated at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna and the University of Vienna. He then conducted with the Imperial Opera House in Vienna.

1907

In 1907 he came to the US with Oscar Hammerstein and for four years worked with the Manhattan Opera Company in New York. While on Broadway he demonstrated the artistic and commercial possibilities of using intelligent music to accompany films.
