Husn Banu Ghazanfar is an Afghan politician and diplomat who served as the Minister of Women's Affairs in the government of President Hamid Karzai from 2004 to 2009. She is the first woman to hold the position. Ghazanfar was born in Balkh, Afghanistan, on 1 February 1957. She is the daughter of a prominent Afghan politician, Ghulam Muhammad Ghazanfar. She received her early education in Kabul, and later attended the University of Kabul, where she earned a degree in political science. Ghazanfar began her career in the Afghan government in the 1980s, when she was appointed as a deputy minister in the Ministry of Women's Affairs. She later served as the director of the Afghan Women's Council, and in 2004, she was appointed as the Minister of Women's Affairs. In 2009, Ghazanfar was appointed as the Afghan Ambassador to the United Kingdom, a position she held until 2014. She is currently the Afghan Ambassador to the United Nations. Ghazanfar is a strong advocate for women's rights in Afghanistan, and has been a vocal critic of the Taliban's treatment of women.
