Ian Hay was a British novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He was born in Manchester, England, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He began his career as a journalist, writing for the Manchester Guardian and other newspapers. He later wrote plays and novels, and was a successful screenwriter in Hollywood. His most famous works include the novels The First Hundred Thousand (1915) and The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (1917). He also wrote the screenplay for the classic film The 39 Steps (1935). He died in 1952 in London.
