Ian McWhinney is a British physician and professor emeritus of family medicine at the University of Western Ontario. He is best known for his work in family medicine, particularly in the areas of family systems theory and family medicine education. McWhinney was born in Burnley, England, on 11 October 1926. He received his medical degree from the University of Manchester in 1951 and completed his postgraduate training in family medicine at the University of London in 1954. McWhinney moved to Canada in 1957 and began teaching family medicine at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He was appointed professor of family medicine in 1971 and served as the head of the department from 1971 to 1986. He was also the founding director of the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine at the University of Western Ontario. McWhinney has written extensively on family medicine and family systems theory. He is the author of the textbook Family Medicine: Principles and Practice, which is now in its sixth edition. He has also written several books on family systems theory, including The Family Crucible and Families and Health Care. McWhinney has received numerous awards and honors for his work in family medicine, including the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, and the Canadian Medical Association Medal of Service. 1997

In 1997, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2000, he was awarded honorary degrees from the University of Oslo and the University of Western Ontario. In 2006, he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

1964

He was inspired by particularly two articles, the work of James MacKenzie and a paper about postgraduate teaching in family practice in the New England Journal of Medicine. These led him to author his first book, The Early Signs of Illness: Observations in General Practice in 1964 and then gain a Nuffield Traveling Fellowship in family medicine with Robert Haggerty at Harvard University. By 1968, he had moved his family away from his father and to the University of Western Ontario as the first chair of family medicine in Canada. He became admired as the ‘Osler’ of Canadian family physicians.

1940

Born in Burnley, England, he studied at Cheltenham College from 1940 to 1944. During World War II, he served with the Royal Army Medical Corps. After the war, he studied at Clare College, Cambridge and at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital at the University of London.
