He is best known for co-founding the iconic nightclub Studio 54 in 1977, and for founding the boutique hotel chain Morgans Hotel Group in 1984. He is also the founder of the Ian Schrager Company, a real estate development and management firm. Schrager was born in New York City on July 19, 1946. He attended the University of Syracuse, where he earned a degree in business administration. After college, he worked as a real estate broker and eventually opened his own real estate firm. In 1977, Schrager and his business partner Steve Rubell opened the iconic nightclub Studio 54. The club quickly became a hotspot for celebrities and the rich and famous. It was eventually shut down in 1980 due to tax evasion charges. In 1984, Schrager founded the boutique hotel chain Morgans Hotel Group. The chain was known for its stylish and modern design, and for its celebrity clientele. The chain was eventually sold to the SBE Entertainment Group in 2005. In 2009, Schrager founded the Ian Schrager Company, a real estate development and management firm. The firm has developed and managed a number of high-end residential and commercial properties, including the Public Hotel in New York City.
