He is best known for his success in the sport of show jumping, having won multiple medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships. He has also been a successful coach, having trained many of Romania's top riders. Jipa began riding at the age of seven and quickly developed a passion for the sport. He competed in his first international event in 1948 and went on to win multiple medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships. He won a gold medal in the team show jumping event at the 1972 Munich Olympics and a bronze medal in the individual event at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He also won a silver medal in the team event at the 1978 World Championships. Jipa has also been a successful coach, having trained many of Romania's top riders. He was the coach of the Romanian team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
