Ira Coleman is a renowned jazz bassist, composer, and arranger. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 29, 1956. He began playing the bass at the age of 12 and went on to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Coleman has performed with some of the most renowned jazz musicians in the world, including Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, and Chick Corea. He has also released several solo albums, including "The Journey" (1995), "The Dream" (1998), and "The Source" (2001). Coleman has been a member of the faculty at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City since 1997. He has also taught at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Coleman has won numerous awards, including the Jazz Journalists Association's Bassist of the Year Award in 1998 and the Jazz Education Network's Educator of the Year Award in 2011.
