Ivan Roitt is a British immunologist and professor emeritus at the Institute of Child Health, University College London. He was born on 30 September 1927 in London, England. Roitt studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and graduated in 1951. He then went on to specialize in immunology and worked at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. In 1965, he was appointed professor of immunology at the Institute of Child Health, University College London, where he remained until his retirement in 1992. Roitt is best known for his work on the immune system, particularly the development of the concept of the primary and secondary immune response. He has written several books on immunology, including Essential Immunology, which is now in its 13th edition. Roitt has received numerous awards for his work, including the Royal Society's Royal Medal in 1988 and the Copley Medal in 2002. He was also made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1975.
