J.B. Collip was a Canadian biochemist and physiologist who was a major contributor to the discovery of insulin. He was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada on November 20, 1892. He attended the University of Toronto, where he earned a B.A. in 1914 and an M.A. in 1915. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Chicago in 1918. Collip's research focused on the endocrine system, and he was a major contributor to the discovery of insulin. He was part of the team that isolated and purified insulin, and he was the first to successfully inject it into a human patient. He also developed a method for purifying insulin, which allowed for its mass production. Collip was a professor of biochemistry at the University of Alberta from 1921 to 1929, and he was the first director of the Connaught Laboratories at the University of Toronto from 1929 to 1945. He was also a professor of physiology at McGill University from 1945 to 1957. Collip was a member of the Royal Society of Canada and the National Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the Flavelle Medal in 1935 and the Royal Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1945. He died on June 6, 1965 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
