Jaap De Hoop Scheffer is a Dutch politician and diplomat who served as the 11th Secretary General of NATO from 2004 to 2009. He was born on 3 April 1948 in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. He studied law at the University of Amsterdam and graduated in 1975. He began his political career in 1977 when he was elected to the Dutch House of Representatives. He served in various ministerial positions in the Dutch government from 1982 to 2002. In 2004, he was appointed Secretary General of NATO, a position he held until 2009. Since leaving NATO, De Hoop Scheffer has held a number of positions in the private sector, including Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dutch bank ING Group and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dutch energy company Gasunie. He is also a member of the Global Leadership Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to promote good governance and human rights around the world.
