Jacinto Benavente was a Spanish playwright, director, and Nobel Prize laureate in Literature. He was born in Madrid on August 12, 1866, to a wealthy family. He studied law at the University of Madrid, but soon abandoned it to pursue a career in the theater. He wrote his first play in 1892, and it was an immediate success. He went on to write more than sixty plays, many of which were performed in Spain and abroad. He was also a director and actor, and was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. In 1922, Benavente was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his "vivid and imaginative style of writing." He was the first Spanish writer to receive the honor. He was also a member of the French Legion of Honor and the Order of Isabella the Catholic. Jacinto Benavente died in Madrid on July 14, 1954. He was 87 years old. His works are still widely read and performed today.
