Jack Bogle was an American investor, business magnate, and philanthropist. He was the founder and retired CEO of The Vanguard Group, and the creator of the first index mutual fund. Bogle is credited with creating the first index fund available to individual investors, and is considered to be the father of index investing. Bogle was born on July 4, 1900 in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Blair Academy and Princeton University, graduating in 1951 with a degree in economics. After college, he worked for the Wellington Fund, where he developed the idea of index investing. In 1974, Bogle founded The Vanguard Group, which is now one of the largest mutual fund companies in the world. He served as the company's CEO until 1996, when he retired. Bogle was a strong advocate for low-cost investing and was a vocal critic of Wall Street's focus on short-term profits. He wrote several books on investing, including The Little Book of Common Sense Investing and Enough: True Measures of Money, Business, and Life. Bogle died on January 16, 2019 at the age of 89. He was survived by his wife, Eve, and their four children.
