After college, he worked as a reporter for the Kansas City Star and then moved to New York City to work for the New York Times. McClain wrote several books, including "The Last of the Cowboys" and "The Last of the Indians." He also wrote for television and film, including the television series "The Wild Wild West" and the movie "The Cowboys." McClain was married to his wife, Mary, for over 50 years. He had two children, a son and a daughter. McClain passed away in 2021 at the age of 97. He was an accomplished writer and journalist who left behind a legacy of great work.
