Jacques Plante was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played for the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was the first goaltender to regularly wear a mask for protection in the NHL. Plante was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978, and was voted one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in 2017. Plante was born in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, and began playing hockey at the age of five. He played junior hockey for the Shawinigan Cataractes before joining the Montreal Canadiens in 1952. He won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goaltender in seven consecutive seasons, and was named to the NHL All-Star Team eight times. He was also a member of six Stanley Cup-winning teams with the Canadiens. Plante was known for his innovative style of goaltending, which emphasized the use of a mask and a stand-up style of play. He was also an early proponent of the butterfly style of goaltending, which is now the most common style of goaltending in the NHL. Plante retired from the NHL in 1975 and went on to coach several teams in the World Hockey Association (WHA). He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1978 and his number 1 jersey was retired by the Canadiens in 1995. He died in 1986 at the age of 57.
