He has also written and directed several television series, including Les Revenants (2012-2015) and Les Hommes de l'ombre (2016-2017). Rampal was born in Constantine, French Algeria, now Algeria, on 17 May 1944. He studied at the University of Paris and the National Film School of France. Rampal has been married to actress and director Valérie Donzelli since 2011. They have two children together. Rampal has won numerous awards for his work, including the César Award for Best Director for The Artist in 2011, the Prix Lumières for Best Director for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly in 2007, and the Prix Lumières for Best Director for La Vie en Rose in 2007.
