White was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised in the Crenshaw district of South Central Los Angeles. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied theater and film. White began his career as a stand-up comedian, performing at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles. He made his television debut in 1989, appearing on the sitcom 227. He then went on to appear in a number of television shows, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Martin, and The Wayans Bros. In 1989, White was cast as Steve Urkel in the ABC/CBS sitcom Family Matters. The role made him a household name and earned him two Young Artist Awards. He also voiced the character of Leon Kompowsky in The Simpsons episode "Stark Raving Dad". White has also appeared in films, including The Great White Hype, The Ladies Man, and Big Fat Liar.
