James Allen Bland was an African-American composer, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Flushing, New York, and was one of the most prolific African-American songwriters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He wrote over 600 songs, including "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" and "Oh, Dem Golden Slippers". He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. Bland was born to a family of free African-Americans. He was educated at the Flushing Institute and the New York Institute for the Education of the Colored Youth. He began his career as a minstrel performer, and later became a vaudeville singer and songwriter. He wrote songs for Broadway shows and Tin Pan Alley publishers. Bland's most famous song, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny", was written in 1878 and became the official state song of Virginia in 1940. He also wrote "In the Evening by the Moonlight", "Oh, Dem Golden Slippers", and "In the Morning by the Bright Light". Bland died in 1911 in New York City. He was 57 years old.

He was buried in an unmarked grave but in 1939 the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) provided a headstone at the grave site to commemorate his life.

In 1901 he returned penniless to Washington, D. C. , and as the popularity of minstrel shows waned, Bland could not find work.

In 1881, he moved to London, spending the next twenty years there before returning to the United States. While in London, he performed without blackface and gave command performances for Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales. Bland was making $10,000 a year at one point but recklessly spent his money.
