James Avery was an American actor, voice actor, and poet. He was best known for his role as Uncle Phil in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also had roles in the films 8 Million Ways to Die, The Brady Bunch Movie, and The Prince of Egypt. Avery was born in Pughsville, Virginia, and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He attended the University of California, San Diego, where he earned a degree in drama. Avery began his career in the late 1970s, appearing in television shows such as The Jeffersons, Good Times, and Hill Street Blues. He also had a recurring role in the sitcom Amen. In 1990, Avery was cast as Uncle Phil in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a role he would play for six seasons. He also had a recurring role in the sitcom Sparks. In addition to his acting career, Avery was also a poet and a voice actor. He provided the voice of Shredder in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, and he voiced characters in the video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Avery died on December 31, 2013, at the age of 68. He was survived by his wife, Barbara, and their two children.
