James B. Smith is an American politician who served as the 79th Governor of Georgia from 1999 to 2003. He was born on August 25, 1952, in Brooks, Georgia, to James and Mary Smith. He attended the University of Georgia, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1974. Smith began his political career in 1981, when he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. He served in the House until 1991, when he was elected to the Georgia Senate. In 1995, he was elected lieutenant governor of Georgia, and he served in that position until 1999, when he was elected governor. As governor, Smith focused on improving education, creating jobs, and improving the state's infrastructure. He also worked to improve the state's environment and to reduce crime. He was re-elected in 2002, but he chose not to run for a third term in 2006. Since leaving office, Smith has served on the boards of several companies, including Delta Air Lines, SunTrust Banks, and the Georgia Aquarium.
