James Benton was an English actor who had a long career in film, television, and theatre. He was born on 22 June 1903 in Tamworth, Staffordshire, England, UK. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Benton began his career in the theatre, appearing in a number of plays in the West End and on tour. He made his film debut in the 1934 film The Man Who Knew Too Much. He went on to appear in a number of films, including The 39 Steps (1935), The Lady Vanishes (1938), and The Third Man (1949). Benton also had a long career in television, appearing in a number of series, including The Avengers (1961-1969), The Saint (1962-1969), and Doctor Who (1966-1967). He also appeared in a number of television films, including The Haunting of Julia (1977) and The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1986). Benton was married twice, first to actress Joan Maude in 1934, and then to actress Mary Merrall in 1945. He had two children from his first marriage. Benton died on 28 April 1988 in London, England, UK. He was 84 years old.
