James 'Buster' Douglas is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1981 to 1999. He is best known for his stunning upset of Mike Tyson to win the undisputed heavyweight championship in 1990. Born on April 7, 1960, in Columbus, Ohio, Douglas was raised by his mother, Lula Pearl Douglas, and his stepfather, Bill Garrett. He was an average student in school, but he excelled in sports, particularly boxing. At the age of 21, Douglas made his professional boxing debut in 1981. He won his first fight, and went on to win his first 10 bouts. In 1984, he won the Ohio State Heavyweight Championship. In 1986, Douglas fought Mike Tyson for the undisputed heavyweight championship. Douglas was a huge underdog, but he shocked the world by knocking out Tyson in the 10th round. He became the first heavyweight champion to come from Columbus, Ohio. Douglas held the title for nine months before losing it to Evander Holyfield in 1990. He retired from boxing in 1999 with a record of 38 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw.
