James C. Collins is an American author, consultant, and lecturer on business and management. He is best known for his books Built to Last and Good to Great. He is the co-founder of a management research and consulting firm, and a professor at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Born on January 25, 1958, in Aurora, Colorado, Collins is the son of a United States Air Force officer. He graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1980 with a degree in mathematics and economics. He then earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1984. Collins began his career as a research associate at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He then joined the consulting firm Bain & Company, where he worked for six years. In 1995, he co-founded a management research and consulting firm, and in 1997, he became a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Collins is the author of several books, including Built to Last (1994), Good to Great (2001), How the Mighty Fall (2009), and Great by Choice (2011).
