James D. Thurman is a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He served as the Commander of United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and United States Forces Korea from 2011 to 2013. He was also the Commander of the Eighth United States Army from 2008 to 2011.
Thurman was born on 19 September 1953 in Marietta, Oklahoma. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1975 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry. He later earned a master's degree in international relations from Troy State University.
Thurman served in a variety of command and staff positions throughout his career, including as the Deputy Commanding General of the Multi-National Corps-Iraq from 2006 to 2008. He was also the Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Europe from 2003 to 2006.
Thurman retired from the Army in 2013 after 38 years of service. He is currently the President and CEO of the Association of the United States Army.
