James E. Thornton is an American computer scientist and professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota. He is best known for his work in the field of computer architecture and for his contributions to the development of the first commercial computer, the IBM System/360. Born in 1925 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Thornton attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1947. He then went on to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1949. In 1951, Thornton joined IBM as a research engineer and worked on the development of the IBM System/360. He was part of the team that developed the first commercial computer, which was released in 1964. Thornton left IBM in 1966 and joined the University of Minnesota as a professor of computer science. He was a professor at the university until his retirement in 1992. Throughout his career, Thornton has received numerous awards and honors, including the IEEE Computer Society's Computer Pioneer Award in 1989 and the IEEE Computer Society's Computer Science and Engineering Award in 1992. In 1994 he received the Eckert-Mauchly Award "for his pioneering work on high performance processors; for inventing the scoreboard for instruction issue; and for fundamental contributions to vector supercomputing." In 1997 he received the Harry H. Goode Memorial Award from the IEEE Computer Society "for pioneering contributions and leadership in high performance computing and networking."

1974

In 1974 he co-founded Network Systems Corporation, which manufactured computer networks connecting mainframes and minicomputers, including HYPERchannel.

1950

Thornton studied electrical engineering at the University of Minnesota earning a bachelor's degree in 1950. Immediately afterwards he went to Engineering Research Associates (ERA), which was acquired by Remington Rand in 1952. In 1958 he left with other ERA engineers to form the new Control Data Corporation (CDC). He remained there until 1973 and was involved in the development of the CDC 1604, CDC 6600, 6400, 6500, and the STAR-100. With Seymour Cray, he was the main developer of the pioneering supercomputer CDC 6000, which came onto the market in 1964.
