James L. Wright is a former American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from New York's 22nd congressional district from 1983 to 1993. Born on March 10, 1925, in New York City, Wright attended public schools in the Bronx and graduated from the City College of New York in 1948. He served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947. Wright was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1965 to 1983, sitting in the 181st, 182nd, 183rd, 184th, 185th, 186th, 187th, 188th and 189th New York State Legislatures. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1972 and 1976. In 1982, Wright was elected to the 98th United States Congress, defeating Republican incumbent Hamilton Fish, Jr. He was re-elected to the four succeeding Congresses, and served from January 3, 1983, to January 3, 1993. Wright is currently retired and resides in New York City.
