James Rolph Jr. was an American politician and actor who served as the 30th mayor of San Francisco from January 1912 to January 1931. He was known as "Sunny Jim" and was a popular figure in the city. Rolph was born in San Francisco on August 23, 1869. He attended public schools and worked in his father's wholesale grocery business. He later became a successful businessman, and in 1906 he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In 1911, Rolph was elected mayor of San Francisco. He was re-elected in 1915, 1919, 1923, 1927, and 1931. During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the San Francisco Civic Center, and the San Francisco International Airport. He also helped to establish the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Rolph retired from politics in 1931 and died in 1934. He was 65 years old.
