Jan Berenstain was an American writer and illustrator of children's books, best known for the series of books she wrote and illustrated with her husband, Stan Berenstain. She was born Janice Marian Grant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 26, 1923. She attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, where she met Stan Berenstain. The two married in 1946 and began collaborating on books in the early 1950s. The Berenstains' first book, The Big Honey Hunt, was published in 1962. It was the first of more than 200 books they wrote and illustrated together, including the popular Berenstain Bears series. The Berenstains also wrote and illustrated several books about science and nature, as well as books about the Bible and Christian values. Jan Berenstain died on November 26, 2012, at the age of 89. She was survived by her husband, Stan, and their two sons, Leo and Michael.
