2020

In May 2020, during COVID-19 pandemic, he told Flemish TV Channel VRT that "young people benefit the least from the lockdown measures, because they are less susceptible to the virus" and that the "older generation should realise that young people are sacrificing themselves, both economically and in terms of mental health". As a consequence, he suggested that older people should pay a corona tax to support the young. In reaction, the economist was accused online of "scapegoating" the old, with one commenter slating him for suggesting such a proposal "in a country where taxes are highest and pensions are lowest". Other researchers also pointed out the particular vulnerability of older people due to coronavirus.

2016

In 2016, De Neve collaborated with the Ministry of Finance in Belgium to rework tax reminder letters. According to the media, the experiment boosted tax compliance by 18.6 million euros with a reduction of 1 million euros of administrative costs. De Neve's work made prime time television and radio in Belgium and France.

Jan-Emmanuel De Neve (born 14 March 1979) is a Belgian economist and professor at the University of Oxford where he directs the Wellbeing Research Centre. De Neve is also the KSI Fellow and Vice-Principal of Harris Manchester College. He is best known for his research on the economics of wellbeing which has led to new insights into the relationship between wellbeing and income, productivity, economic growth, and inequality. De Neve is also an editor of the World Happiness Report.
