Jan Gerhard Toonder was a Dutch writer and illustrator. He is best known for his comic strips Tom Poes and Kappie, which were published in newspapers and magazines from the 1930s to the 1970s. He also wrote and illustrated several books, including the popular children's book series De Avonturen van Tom Poes (The Adventures of Tom Poes). Toonder was born in Rotterdam in 1914. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and began his career as a cartoonist in the 1930s. He created the comic strip Tom Poes in 1934, which was published in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. The strip was an instant success and was soon adapted into a series of books. Toonder also created the comic strip Kappie, which was published in the Dutch magazine De Groene Amsterdammer from 1938 to 1971. He wrote and illustrated several books, including the popular children's book series De Avonturen van Tom Poes (The Adventures of Tom Poes). Toonder was awarded the Dutch Order of Orange-Nassau in 1975 for his contributions to Dutch culture. He died in Rotterdam in 2005.
