She attended the University of Southern California, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Batchler began her career as a script reader for Warner Bros. in the late 1980s. She then moved on to writing and directing, and her first feature film was the 1995 film Batman Forever. She co-wrote the screenplay with her husband, Lee Batchler, and Akiva Goldsman. The film was a box office success, grossing over $336 million worldwide. Batchler then wrote the screenplay for the 1997 film Volcano, which was directed by Mick Jackson and starred Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche. The film was a moderate success, grossing over $122 million worldwide. In 1998, Batchler co-wrote the screenplay for the action-adventure film Armageddon, which was directed by Michael Bay and starred Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and Liv Tyler. The film was a huge success, grossing over $553 million worldwide. Batchler has since written and directed several short films, and has also written the screenplay for the upcoming film The Last Days of Night, which is set to be released in 2021.
