Jason Kao Hwang is an American violinist, composer, and improviser. He was born in 1957 in Waukegan, IL. He is best known for his work in jazz, free improvisation, and contemporary classical music. Hwang began playing the violin at the age of seven and studied classical music at the University of Illinois. He later moved to New York City and began performing with jazz and free improvisation groups. He has released several albums as a leader and has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including Anthony Braxton, William Parker, and Butch Morris. Hwang has composed for chamber ensembles, orchestras, and dance companies. He has also written music for film and television. He is the founder and artistic director of the Far East Side Band, a large ensemble that performs his compositions. Hwang has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and a New York State Council on the Arts Composer Fellowship. He is currently a professor of music at the University of California, San Diego.

Hwang's parents had emigrated to the United States from Hunan after World War II. He was born in Lake Forest, Illinois and grew up in Waukegan. He studied classical violin before attending New York University where he received a degree in film and television. During his time at NYU, he became interested in jazz, and soon devoted himself to a career as a musician. He was active in New York City's free jazz scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but over the next decade he increasingly focused on Asian American jazz. His later work, including his opera The Floating Box and his extended composition Burning Bridge for a mixed ensemble of jazz, classical and Chinese instruments, has explored his own identity as an Asian American.
