Jay Hammond was born on July 21, 1922 in Troy, New York. He attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks and graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1948. He then served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After his service, he moved to Alaska and began working as a commercial fisherman. In 1966, Hammond was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives and served until 1970. He was then elected to the Alaska Senate and served until 1974. In 1974, he was elected Governor of Alaska and served until 1982. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the passage of the Alaska Permanent Fund, which provides an annual dividend to all Alaskan residents. After leaving office, Hammond continued to be active in Alaska politics and served on the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 1983 to 1989. He also wrote several books about his experiences in Alaska. Jay Hammond died on August 2, 2005 at the age of 83. He was survived by his wife, four children, and seven grandchildren.
