Jean Aicardi is a French physician and neurologist who is best known for his work on the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy in children. He was born on 8 November 1926 in Rambouillet, France. Aicardi studied medicine at the University of Paris and graduated in 1952. He then went on to specialize in neurology and psychiatry, and in 1958 he became the head of the pediatric neurology department at the Hôpital des Enfants Malades in Paris. Aicardi is credited with the discovery of Aicardi syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the development of the brain and spinal cord. He also wrote several books on the subject of epilepsy in children, including "Epilepsy in Children" (1966) and "Epilepsy in Infancy and Childhood" (1972). Aicardi was awarded the Grand Prix de la Fondation de France in 1975 and the Grand Prix de l'Académie Nationale de Médecine in 1981. He was also made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1988.
