Aublanc began his career as an assistant director in the 1970s, working on films such as La Grande Bouffe (1973) and Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire (1972). He made his directorial debut in 1988 with La Vie est un long fleuve tranquille, which was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1995, he directed La Haine, a critically acclaimed drama about three young men living in a Parisian housing project. The film won numerous awards, including the César Award for Best Film. In 2004, he directed Les Choristes, a drama about a music teacher in a boys' boarding school. The film was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
