Jeff Bingaman is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from New Mexico from 1983 to 2013. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Bingaman was born in El Paso, Texas, and grew up in Silver City, New Mexico. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1965 and a law degree in 1968. After graduating from Harvard, he served as a law clerk for a federal judge in New Mexico. Bingaman was elected to the New Mexico State Senate in 1972 and served until 1978. He was then elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served from 1979 to 1983. In 1982, he was elected to the United States Senate, where he served until 2013. During his time in the Senate, Bingaman was a strong advocate for renewable energy and environmental protection. He was also a leader in the effort to pass the Affordable Care Act. Bingaman retired from the Senate in 2013 and is currently a senior counsel at the law firm of Hogan Lovells. He is also a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center.
