Jerome Hines was an American operatic bass-baritone who had a long and distinguished career in opera, concert, and recital. He was born in Hollywood, California, and studied at the University of Southern California and the Juilliard School. He made his debut at the San Francisco Opera in 1945 and went on to perform with many of the world's leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and the Royal Opera House. Hines was known for his powerful voice and his ability to sing a wide range of roles, from comic to tragic. He was particularly noted for his performances of the title roles in Mozart's Don Giovanni and Verdi's Falstaff. He also sang in the world premieres of several operas, including Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra and Gian Carlo Menotti's The Consul. Hines was also active in the recording studio, making numerous recordings of operatic arias and songs. He was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the French Legion of Honor. He died in 2003 at the age of 81.
