Meyer was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada on July 2, 1927. He attended the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Physical Education degree. After graduating, he began his career as a physical education teacher and coach at the University of Toronto. In the late 1950s, Meyer began working with the Canadian Olympic team, where he served as a coach and mentor for many of the country's top athletes. He was instrumental in helping the Canadian team win gold medals in the 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics. In addition to his work with the Canadian Olympic team, Meyer has also served as a coach and mentor for many professional athletes, including hockey players Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.
