Abbas was born at Longsight in Manchester. He made his debut in minor counties cricket for Cheshire in the 1999 MCCA Knockout Trophy against the Lancashire Cricket Board. A fortnight later he played in a List A one-day match against the Surrey Cricket Board in the 1999 NatWest Trophy at Wimbledon. In a match which Cheshire won by 9 runs, Abbas scored 6 runs before he was dismissed by Chris Bullen. Later in that season he played his first Minor Counties Championship against Devon. He played minor counties cricket for Cheshire until 2002, making three appearances in the Minor Counties Championship and five in the MCCA Knockout Trophy.
